Electronic Financial Disclosure

E-File Overview

Electronic financial disclosure allows people who are required to file an annual financial disclosure statement to do so on the Internet. In 2007, more than 22,000 people filed electronically and more than 80,000 statements have been filed electronically since e-file went on line in 1999.

People who used e-file last year find their electronic form has their previous year's data. All they need do is update the data and submit it.

The program works with the major browsers. Just click on the Electronic Financial Disclosure link on our home page. You will be asked to provide your User ID, and your password, which are sent separately by letter each year, about six weeks before the filing deadline. Please note: Last year’s passwords are no longer valid although in many cases your User ID remains the same from year to year.

The first time you enter your User ID and password, you are asked to change your password. Then, your browser loads the e-file program. If you are new to electronic filing, you form will be blank. If you filed electronically the previous year, that data will be in your electronic form.

You may work on your form over as many sessions as you wish, and from different locations. You may print the form. When you want to conclude a session, you may save the form. As a security measure, your data is not saved on your computer. The data is encrypted and transmitted to our secure server where it remains encrypted until the next time you log in and use your form.

When you complete the form and press the "Finish" button, several important things happen. 1) You are asked to verify your postal and e-mail addresses. 2) Your data is encrypted and transmitted to our secure server. 3) Your form is checked for completeness. If you forgot any item, you will be asked to complete it. When all items are complete and you press the "Finish" button, you will see a congratulatory "Done" message and a receipt will be sent to the e-mail address that you specified. Your data is locked so that no further changes may be made. However, you may still log in, view your data and make a print-out.

The e-file program cannot be used to prepare forms due in a prior calendar year, so each year we close it on December 31. After filer lists are updated, e-file goes back on line and new passwords are mailed to users. This it is generally completed by September 30 for academic filers and March 30 for all other filers.
